Songwriters in the Round – KE Cellars

I had a blast last weekend sharing the stage with two great Texas Songwriters. Connie Mims (winner of the 2009 Texas Music Award’s Songwriter of the Year award) and Randy Brown (winner of last year’s Americana Music Festival - Songwriter of the Year Award).

Usually the guy without the credentials owns the van, the sound system or both. OK ….. I got in on the gig by misrepresenting my qualifications. Nevertheless, we had a great time kickin’ in on each others music, and picking up on some new tunes each of us have written since we last gathered together.

There was a room full off friends, musical family and refugees. We hope to do it again soon if we can break out another window.

Nashville Songwriters Association – Houston Chapter

I had the privilege to attend a mini-meeting of the Nashville Songwriters Association International in Houston in 2008. Connie Mims is the organizer and a great songwriter on her own. The session was a chance to hear some exceptional southern talent and enjoy the ambiance of Dosey Doe of Houston.

The main room is a 150 year old barn from Kentucky, disassembles and reassembled in the Woodlands. The beams and columns are all hand hewn timbers! Many great performers have performed in this room including Clint Black, Leon Russell, Marcia Ball, Michael Martin Murphy, Mason Williams, Richie Havens, Radney Foster, Tish Hinojosa, Lee Roy Parnel, Asleep at the Wheel, Juice Newton, Jerry Jeff Walker, and on and on!

The atmosphere was friendly and and it was an opportunity to try some new tunes on a group of songwriters. Many members of the group have provided songs to some of the top names in the music business. The newest Sherman tune “Mama Was a Gambler” (not Mama Sara, this one is fiction) seemed to get the most mileage. I got some good recommendations and I left there with some good homework!

Writing Run Girl Run

What would your tell your first granddaughter? What would your want to hear if you never got to speak to her as a teenager? Shortly ofter Lilly Katherine was born I wrote this song about the five things he wanted her to know as she grows up. “Run” in this tune is a metaphor for running toward righteousness and running from evil.

Run Girl Run has a couple of borrowed tips. They are simple. Kyle Lake always ended his messages with “Love God” and Randy Brown challenges us to “Dream Big”

Preston Signs Autographs for Two

In October of 2008 Preston and I got to perform with Beatlegras in Winnsboro, Texas. Crossroads Coffeehouse is a great venue and is situated in the heart of downtown Winnsboro. It is operated by Lynn Alder and Lindy Hearne, along with daughter Kate Hearne. All three are exceptional performing artists and they have booked some incredible talent over the last few years. It was a pleasure for us to open for Beatlegras in October.

We played our set and sold a few RiverSide CDs. During the break, one of the sweetest things that ever happened to me occurred. Preston and I were opening CDs, taking money and signing CDs. I was scratching my usual signature and Preston was signing … capital P, capital R, capital E, etc. We were sharing a Sharpie. I was occupied talking to a customer. When I looked up I saw one of the CDs signed “PRESTON“ and “PAPA”

“Papa, I signed this one for you” he said. PRICELESS!

Dave Sherman Receives SongVault.FM Airplay

RiverSide CD Release Concert

The RiverSide CD release concert was the highlight of the RiverSide CD project.

The musicians that provided their talents in the studio appeared at the CD Release Concert.

Musicians included Billy Bob Dempsey, Andrea Holcek, Dirje Smith, David Smith, Doug Algood, Jay Abercrombe, my producer Randy Brown, and naturally, Preston. Because of the way digital recording is usually scheduled, some of the musicians knew each other, but some of them had never played together. Their talent is incredible and after a few hours of practice, they pulled it off impeccably.

Teresa, Kate, Taylor, Ashley and the whole family and “fan base” provided all the extras to make this a night to remember. Professional photographer and family member Carroll Sinclair captured the sights of the night. These are a few of the shots. For more pics, CLICK HERE
